CF Food Today

About CF Food Today

CF Food Today started in 2011 with a simple aim: help people with cystic fibrosis enjoy exciting, home-made, nutritious food. Back then nearly everyone with CF needed far more calories than other people. Most people with CF can't fully absorb nutrients from food, so a high-fat, high-energy diet (still with your 5-a-day) was the advice for almost everyone.

A lot has changed since then, so CF Food Today is back as a place where the whole CF community can share recipes and support each other.

High energy or lighter: what's changed?

CFTR modulators such as Kaftrio (with Kalydeco), Kalydeco on its own, and the newer Alyftrek have changed life for many people with CF. Lots of people on them find they absorb food better, have fewer chest infections and burn less energy. That's great news, but it also means the old "eat as much as you can" advice doesn't suit everyone any more. Some people now put on more weight than they'd like.

High energy

For people who still need extra calories: babies and children who are growing, anyone not on a modulator or not suited to one, people who are underweight or unwell, and anyone their dietitian has asked to eat more.

Lighter

Lower-calorie, balanced ideas for people whose energy needs have dropped, often on modulators, who want to keep a healthy weight without losing out on flavour.

Adaptable

Recipes that can go either way. Look for the Make it higher or lower energy tips, which are perfect for families where one person needs more and another needs less.

Everyone with CF is different. Your CF team and dietitian know your needs, including enzymes, salt, vitamins and calorie targets. Recipes here are shared by members for ideas and inspiration, and they're not medical advice.

Nutrition information

When members add a recipe they can match each ingredient to a product on Open Food Facts, a free, open database of food products from around the world. We use it to estimate calories, fat, protein, salt and more per serving. Figures are estimates, so always check packaging where it matters.
